Symptoms of Giardia in Dogs
Vomiting
Dogs that are infected with the Giardia parasite are frequently known to vomit on a regular basis. This symptom is usually combined with other gastrointestinal symptoms, and is not unique to Giardiasis.
Fever
In some dogs that are infected with Giardia, a fever will be present. This fever is usually persistent for three or four days, and may then proceed into an increasingly sub-acute phase. In many dogs, a recurring fever is present over a period of time.
Loss of Interest in Food
Most dogs that are infected with the Giardia parasite may begin to show a lack of interest in mealtimes. This may begin gradually, with a dog eating smaller quantities at subsequent meals, until eventually refusing food altogether. Though this symptom is not unique to Giardiasis, it is still cause for concern, and should be reason enough to seek veterinary attention immediately.
Weight Loss
Most dogs with Giardiasis for an extended period of time will begin to display noticeable weight loss. This will usually occur over a period of time, and may or may not be accompanied by secondary symptoms. Possible secondary symptoms of weight loss usually include malnutrition, lack of energy, and loss of fur.
Diarrhea
This is usually the most evident symptom of Giardiasis in dogs. In most cases, the feces of an infected dog will be watery, grease-like and extremely pungent in odor.In some instances, the feces will be accompanied by visible mucous deposits. The reason for this symptom is that the Giardia parasites begin to multiply, and then interfere with the correct absorption of food.
Many veterinarians may need a fresh stool sample in order to form a positive diagnosis, so it may be beneficial to collect a sample of your dog's diarrhea prior to seeking veterinary attention.
